How to buy foreign currency in cash from ANZ

There are 4 ways to buy foreign currency in cash at ANZ bank:

  1. Order it online through ANZ internet banking. You must be an ANZ customer
  2. Use phone banking. Again, you must already be an ANZ customer
  3. Head down to an ANZ branch and order it
  4. Go to an ANZ Foreign Exchange Centre
How to Buy Foreign Currency in Cash from ANZ

1. Online

Log into your internet banking and head to the section on International Services. There is a minimum order size of $500 and a maximum limit of $5000. You can pick the order up from your local branch in 2-3 business days, but you'll need to bring some I.D.

2. Over the Phone

Call 1800 352 535 and follow the prompts. You can order between $500 and $8000 Australian dollars worth of currency and pick it up in 2-3 business days.

3. At the branch

Using a branch to buy your currency isn't the quickest option, because a lot depends on how much stock of currency the branch itself is holding. In most cases, the branch will need to order the currency in, which can take 2-3 business days.

Keep in mind that there are limits to how much you can buy. If you bank with ANZ, you can purchase up to $8,000 Australian dollars worth of currency, but if you don't have an ANZ account, you are limited to AUD $1000.

Make sure you have some I.D. with you, because this is a requirement for any transaction.

4. ANZ Foreign Exchange Centres

These centres are specially good for customers looking to buy or sell foreign currency in cash. They have a much larger stock and range of foreign currencies.

However, keep in mind that there are limits on how much you can buy. You can buy up to $8,000 Australian dollars worth of currency and you don't have to be an ANZ customer.

Like the branches, make sure you have some I.D.

Locations

The ANZ Foreign Exchange Centres are useful, but are limited to CBD's in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth along with airports in Sydney. The Foreign Currency ATM’s are even more limited, with 3 in Melbourne, 1 at Sydney Airport and 1 at Adelaide airport.

  • 388 Collins Street, Melbourne
  • 55 Collins Street, Melbourne
  • 37 Pitt Street, Sydney
  • 665 George Street, Sydney
  • Sydney Airport in various locations
  • 121 King William Street, Adelaide (closed for refurbishment)
  • 112 Rundle Mall, Adelaide
  • 77 St Georges Terrace, Perth

How to Sell Foreign Currency in Cash from ANZ

Selling foreign currency back to ANZ isn't as easy as buying it.

You are limited to using one of the ANZ Foreign Exchange Centres for amounts up to $8,000 Australian dollars. Alternatively, you can go to your ANZ bank branch if you're exchanging less than $1,000 Australian dollars. Make sure you bring valid I.D. such as a passport or drivers licence.

ANZ Cash Packs

ANZ Currency Cash Packs are simply a pack of currency, which you can order to pick up at a branch or ANZ Foreign Exchange Centre.

The packs have a range of different denominations, which can be handy if you are travelling overseas. They're available for most of the major currencies like US dollars (USD), British pounds (GBP) and Euros (EUR). However, it comes with a $5 fee, which is waived if you are an ANZ customer. If you don't bank with ANZ, you are limited to buying packs for $1,000 or less.

What foreign currency exchanges ANZ buy and sell

ANZ buy and sell most major currencies (over 50 in total) but it’s important to understand that not every branch will hold every currency. Foreign Exchange Centres and the airport will have the best stock of the most common currencies. If you want to buy or sell an ‘exotic’ currency, they may have to order it in for you.

Charges, currency conversion fees and commissions

ANZ charges a fee of 1% of any currency bought, together with a minimum fee of $8.

This fee is not applicable for existing ANZ customers.
