How to use Remitly
Once you have an account registered with Remitly you can make a transfer by taking the following steps:
- Sign in on the webpage or open the Remitly app
- Select Get started or Send money
- Enter the amount you want to send and the delivery method
- Add recipient information – bank account details for a bank transfer, or name and personal details for cash pickup
- Complete your profile, adding your name and personal details
- Connect your preferred payment method – bank account or card
- Review, and when you’re ready, hit Send money
- You’ll see a confirmation screen once the payment is finalised

How to create an account
Creating an account with Remitly is simple and can be done on the desktop site or within the Remitly app.

What documents you’ll need
The documents you need for verification will depend on the account tier you want to access. Different account tiers have different sending limits – we’ll cover them a little later – but you can upgrade at any time by providing more information and documents. Here’s the lowdown;
To open a tier 1 account you’ll need:
- Your full name
- Your residential address
- Your date of birth
To open a tier 2 account you’ll need:
- Tier 1 information
- Information about how you use Remitly services, and where funds being sent come from
Tier 3 accounts will require all of the above, and customers may also be asked for additional proof of transaction funding (this may be a bank statement or payslip for example). The Remitly customer service team will guide you through the verification process as needed.
When submitting documents you’ll need one or two documents which together show your full name, address and date of birth. Acceptable documents include:
Passport, Visa or ImmiCard – because these documents show your personal information and address, you may not need a second piece of paperwork if you choose one of these
Driver’s licence or State photo ID – because these documents prove you ID but don’t feature your address, you’ll also need a proof of address
Secondary documents to prove your address: Birth certificate, Citizenship certificate utility bill in your name, bank, credit card or mortgage statement.
How long does verification take?
If your account can be verified electronically it should be available within 48 hours. If you’re required to send in extra documents you’ll be notified within 48 hours, and will receive an update on the processing time once documents are submitted.
How much you can send with Remitly will depend on your account tier. You can increase your account tier by providing additional information and documents for verification. Further limits may also apply based on your destination country and payout method.

- Western Union – offers a similar pay out as Remitly, making it a good provider to compare against Remitly for your specific transfer. With Western Union you can also pay in cash via an agent, which is a service not available through Remitly.
- PayPal or Xoom – send instant payments at home and abroad – convenient and quick, but not always the cheapest. With PayPal your recipient will also need to set up an account to get their money.
